Fetal ultrasound - monitoring that reassures.
✔ Fetal ultrasound is an ultrasound examination performed to assess the progress of pregnancy, fetal growth, and condition.
According to the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania, it is recommended for all pregnant women to undergo several ultrasounds at different stages of pregnancy.
Overview fetal ultrasound (for patients who visit periodically)
✔ Performed at the request of the pregnant woman, in case of certain complaints, or by the decision of the obstetrician-gynecologist.
✔ During the visit, fetal growth, position in the uterus, vital functions, umbilical cord blood flow, placenta position and appearance, and amniotic fluid volume are assessed.
Routine fetal ultrasound
✔ Intended to assess fetal condition, growth, more accurately determine the due date, evaluate the formation of organs and body parts, and rule out possible pathologies.
✔ Parameters of placenta, fetal, and uterine blood flow are also measured.
✔ Examination time according to Ministry of Health recommendations:
– First ultrasound: from 11+0 to 13+6 weeks of pregnancy
– Second ultrasound: from 18+0 to 22+6 weeks of pregnancy
✔ The goal is to ensure that the pregnancy is progressing smoothly and to detect any potential deviations in time.
Genetic fetal ultrasound
✔ Performed as part of prenatal diagnostics, providing a more detailed assessment of fetal anatomy: nuchal translucency thickness, nasal bone, internal organs, and signs of genetic anomaly risk.
✔ Examination times:
– First genetic assessment: from 11+0 to 13+6 weeks of pregnancy
– Second genetic assessment: from 18+0 to 22+6 weeks of pregnancy
– Third genetic assessment (if needed): from 26+0 to 28+6 weeks of pregnancy
This examination can detect up to 80–90% of significant fetal structural changes!
3D Fetal Ultrasound – NEW!
✔ This is a three-dimensional ultrasound examination that allows you to see the baby not only in a plane (as in conventional 2D ultrasound) but also spatially – like in a photograph.
✔ According to the methodologies of the Lithuanian Ultrasound Association and the Ministry of Health, this is not a separate medical examination – 3D ultrasound complements routine or genetic ultrasound. It helps doctors more accurately assess certain anatomical features and helps parents establish an emotional connection with the baby.
✔ Important: the quality and success of the examination depend on the fetal position and the amount of amniotic fluid. Even an experienced specialist cannot guarantee a good visual result.
✔ Optimal time: 26–30 weeks of pregnancy, but at the parents’ request, it can be performed from 12 to 36 weeks of pregnancy.
